Thinking of hiring in-house?

A finance hire or a finance department? Compare both

Hiring a finance manager or finance director feels like the natural next step. For many smaller businesses, though, the problem they want solved, such as knowing which work makes money or getting reliable monthly reporting, might fill 10 to 20% of a full-time role.

You pay for the whole role, and you usually still need an accountant for the accounts, tax and payroll. Here is how the two options compare.

Managing a finance hire

If finance isn't your background, it's hard to know what good looks like. You have to recruit for a role you can't easily assess, set the priorities and check work you may not be able to judge. A good hire can be excellent. A poor one can take months to spot, and the numbers suffer in the meantime.

With us, that responsibility sits with a team that does this every day, and you get the output: numbers you can trust and someone to explain them.

When an in-house hire makes sense

There comes a point where the workload justifies someone full time, and an in-house hire is the right call. It doesn't have to mean starting again.

One of our largest clients started with a Virtual Finance Department. As they grew, they brought in a senior finance manager. We still run everything else, we have gradually handed the strategic work over to him, and we support him in the role while making sure the numbers he relies on are right.

If that's where you're heading, we'll help you plan the role and work alongside the person you hire.
